Every Fourth of July, we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America.
What many people forget is that the road to independence had already turned violent more than a year before July 4, 1776. On April 19, 1775, British troops marched toward Concord, Massachusetts, with orders to seize colonial military stores — including arms, ammunition, and other supplies being held by the local militia.
That mission led directly to the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first major armed clashes of the American Revolution.
In other words, American independence was not won by words alone. The Declaration gave voice to the cause of liberty, but it was defended by ordinary citizens who were willing to stand their ground.
That history is one reason the right to keep and bear arms has always meant so much to so many Americans. To the founding generation, arms were not just tools — they were part of the practical reality of preserving freedom, protecting home and community, and resisting tyranny.
As we celebrate Independence Day, we remember both the ideas that founded this country and the courage of those who fought to secure it.
